FEAR.org home page
At the frames version of the site, can't find a link/page for What's New (like the noframes page http://www.fear.org/whatsnew.html).
frame/noframe versions of the site are so different, might need two entries in my super cross-site navtable.
This site has one of the worst entry-path designs to get from home page to donation page. From the home page, there is *nothing* indicating anything about donation. No clue how to proceed. There is an unreadable scrolling banner asking for money if you look really really hard and wait 30 seconds... Banner doesn't say *how* to donate.
Then finally when you guess the path,
xxx
says
"...A charitable organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. ... Your financial contributions and volunteer efforts are widely needed and greatly appreciated."
The donation page is good because the link from the above page reads "financial contributions" not that awful phrase "join".
This is a good, open, broad title on this page (not "join"): "Membership, Subscription, Donation & Publication Order Form"
Notice *3* distinct categories/audiences/purposes -- membership/join, subscribe, and donate. Good. Very simple clear instructions.
bad- no general email addr provided. no "donations@fear.org" provided. temp: use kbergman@dpla.net and cc kbergman@hooked.net (treasurer)
Bad: no general phone # provided (needed by bank). Treasurer's # not shown on page.
ordform bad - their join/donate form has no email addr for if you have questions.
descri.
bad - treasurer link reads kbergman@dpla.net but brings up "kbergman@hooked.net" - which is correct?
Radio link broken at http://www.fear.org/descri.html, and ezine link.
At http://www.fear.org/listrules.html, "press here" for To Subscribe link is broken. There is a strange asymettry of listserv page-path you see at frames vs. noframes version of site. All subscription-related pages should be clearly findable at both versions of site. I would designate one page the master info page about subscribing, and have linklist to subordinate pages. On each subord page, just have 1 link back to the main subscription page. Now is spaghetti-linked, such as http://www.fear.org/listrules.html has link to Archive, far down the page.
The noframes site needs a thorough check of internal navigation links among pages. Found many broken ones. That's a result of wasting time maintaining two versions of the site: you get two rough/broken sites instead of one polished/tested one. Every new page you add means twice as much work and twice the risk of breaking.
